TCG card scanner on iPhone and Android: what to check

The same scanner can feel different on two phones. Camera focus, image processing, permissions and network speed affect the first scan more than a marketing screenshot does.

Start with a readable photograph

Put one card on a plain, matte surface. Keep the camera parallel to the card, leave the full border visible and avoid a flash reflection across the number or set code. If the lens focuses on the table instead, tap the card's text area and hold still.

Verify the match on the result screen

Check the game, card name, expansion, collector number, language and finish. The same art can appear in a standard print, promo or special treatment with a very different price. A good result screen makes it easy to replace a bad match.

Check permissions and offline behavior

A scanner needs camera access for live capture. Photo-library access should be optional if you only use the camera. Test what happens without a connection: does the app explain that pricing is unavailable, or show an old estimate as if current?

Test the camera you will actually use

On a phone with several lenses, the preview may choose a lens that cannot focus close enough for tiny collector numbers. Move the phone back until the whole card and a small border fit, then tap the number to focus. Try a matte common and a glossy foil. If one is readable and the other blooms with glare, move the light source instead of repeatedly moving closer. Avoid digital zoom when it turns the printed code into softened pixels.

If you scan from a tablet or an older phone, compare its result with a sharp still photo selected from the library. That separates a camera-capture problem from the identification service. Keep a note of the app version and the failed card code when reporting a bug; a generic 'scanner doesn't work' report is difficult to reproduce.

Look for recovery after a wrong result

A useful scanner presents the suggested identity and a way to inspect other printings. Test a card with two finishes under the same code. Can you change the selected finish without taking another photo? Can you search by printed set code when image matching fails? If a slab is photographed, can you mark it as graded so the raw-card price is not added to your collection? These controls matter more than a polished success animation.

Check the collection after correcting the card. The image, selected printing, quantity and estimate should refer to the same physical copy. A mismatch can make a collector think an expensive card was added when the saved record is actually a cheaper base print.

Know what is stored and what is current

A scanner that uploads photos should explain the purpose before capture and offer a privacy policy. A price needs a timestamp or at least a clear indication of when it was last checked. On poor mobile data, the app should preserve the photo and tell you that a fresh quote is unavailable. An unexplained spinner or a stale figure presented as live is a reason to verify elsewhere before a purchase.

Use the same sign-in on both platforms only after checking that your collection syncs. Test one harmless card: add it on one device, then confirm its exact print and quantity on the other. Do this before importing a binder or paying for a long subscription.
